I’m pretty sure most of you have already heard about that “Sterek Book” someone is giving to Hoechlin this weekend at the Wolfs Bane Convention. I’ve seen some pretty crazy assumptions about the whole thing, and a lot of harsh judgement, too. I tried to stay quiet in hopes that things would calm down but then I noticed some people were talking as if whoever was behind the project was sharing (wrong) information, and that things were not going to calm down anytime soon. So I guess it’s better if I explain things out.
This was actually a last minute thing. Siny contacted me a few days ago, suggesting we could do a small booklet to give to Hoechlin with Sterek edits, fanarts and a small explanation of what shipping means and why people ship Sterek, since media portraits it so wrongly. It was supposed to be a light hearted, cute booklet. And most importantly, something respectful and very, very tactful. I want to stress this last part because I’ve seen some outrageous, oddly detailed, accusations.
Once we had it ready, we contacted all the artists we wanted to feature in the booklet and asked for their permission. I sent the asks myself and knew the news would reach fandom somehow after it, but I never thought it’d cause all this drama. I never thought it was that big of a deal, tbh.
From a total of 42 artists, only 3 declined the offer and we removed their creations from the booklet immediately. The rest of artists seemed really excited and pleased with the idea so we moved along and printed it. We printed a few copies for ourselves and our friends, too. Everyone was credited accordingly (or not, if that’s what they wanted), and no one signed the booklet. The only overall credit says “made with love.”
Obviously, we wish we could give this to Jeff but alas, beggars can’t be choosers and we thought Hoechlin could share and enjoy it himself, too. I agreed to do this because I met Hoechlin last May and saw him getting ridiculously excited with a few Sterek fanarts people showed to him. He went so far as to ask for copies for Dylan and took photos to send him. I realized then he really loves what fandom creates around his character.
All edits and fanart featured in this booklet are PG rated. In fact, I went as far as to dismiss fanarts because Derek and Stiles were hugging each other. Only the 25% of featured creations are fanart. We used mostly edits based on actual scenes from the show, not even manips.
Rumor said it was a book with NC17 fanart. Rumor said it was a book of NSFW manips (they went into detail of said manips and boy, let me just tell you, I wish my Photoshop skills were that good). Rumor said it was a book of smut fanfic. And I wonder, who are these people and why is their first thought PORN when someone says “A Sterek book for Hoechlin”? The conclusions some of them reached reflects much more on the way they think than on our intentions.
So this is what actually happened with the “Sterek book.” I’m sorry it’s not a more juicy story of how we printed a bunch of pornish fanart without asking for permission or something. I still have the feeling that someone spoke in my name and spread lies last night, but I can’t be sure. Just wanted to explain the truth of what’s happened from my part, at least, and be done with it.
I’m going to get ready for my trip and let you all reach to your conclusions now. I understand some people will still think this is a terrible idea and will never agree to this kind of project. And I truly respect that. I just wish they respected me back.
